This week's prompt: Top Ten Books Dealing with Tough Subjects

Wowsers--what a topic but it is so important! I am a huge advocate of having books that deal with the tough situations that we can find ourselves in at some point in our life or to read about if someone we know is going through it. The list is split with six I have read prior to today and four more that I know would work for this topic (three of which are on my TBR list).

Here are my Top Ten Books Dealing with Tough Subjects:

1) Speak by Laurie Anderson--this is one of the most amazing books I have read. I highly recommend it.
2) Wintergirls by Laurie Anderson--eating disorders presented like I have never read before

3) Things I Can't Forget by Miranda Kenneally--abortion and how the choices we make can effect us in ways we did not know
4)13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher--suicide; this one is on my list of TBR this year. I need to eek this one into my rotation soon.

5) Stealing Parker by Miranda Kenneally--not as much as the others above but it does present an inappropriate relationship which I feel can easily happen or perhaps even some teens fantasize about at some point during middle/high school.
6) DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger--body image, self image, using sex as a means of feeling better about yourself; If you have not read it--do!

Two I have not read, but are on my massive TBR list:

7) The List by Siobhan Vivian--the stark reality of being rated and judged by your peers; self image; eating disorders
8)Just Listen by Sarah Dessen--rape; losing friendships

9) Gym Candy by Carl Deuker--steroid use to bulk up for sports
10) A Child Called It by Dave Peltzer--child abuse enough said. I have tried several times, just not something I want to read at this time and honestly, I probably never will unless my daughter wants to read it someday.

I admit this was a harder list for me to write today. Perhaps it is because I am not in the right frame of mind to think of other books. I am sure there are some books that I am leaving off my list--I will have to carve out time to go see this week. :)

  1. Nice picks! I haven't read most of them, but almost all are on my TBR list. I'll get to them one of these days!

  2. Duff has been on my to-read shelf for a while. I think I need to get on that one!
Gym Candy also interests me - male body issues while I know exists is not something I have read much about.

    1. They both are great books. :) I added Gym Candy specifically because it is a male protagonist's POV. Thanks for stopping by CeCe. Happy Reading!

  5. I've seen Speak and Wintergirls on a lot of lists, but I have yet to read either of them yet. I've also yet to read any of Miranda Kenneally's Hundred Oaks series, though they are high on my TBR. I'm a bit nervous about Stealing Parker, but Things I can't forget looks fantastic. Looks like I need to read DUFF as well! Lots of adds for my TBR. Great list.
