What is This Book About?

Fiona has a lot to be grateful in her life--she has an adorable daughter and is genuinely friends with her ex-husband, Jackson. Pursuing her dream of opening up a cupcake shop, she cannot of a better location than Sweet, Texas. Her ex-husband, lives there along with most of his extended family. Fiona found the perfect place for both her cupcake shop and a home for her daughter to thrive. On the move to Sweet, she ends up in a horrific car accident. Little did she know her life was about to change, again.

Mike is a firefighter, responding to where the need for help takes him. He cares for his family, doing what he can from afar. The one thing he knows he should not be doing--feeling attracted to his best friend's ex-wife, Fiona. Imagine his surprise when the car accident he shows up to involves none other than Fiona. Mike cannot help it but be drawn to her ever since the bachelor auction. To his surprise, Jackson's mother turns in her winning bid on Mike, and then requests him to help out Fiona.

Mike helps Fiona get settled in her new home and builds cabinets and more for her shop. Throughout all of this, the two of them fight to deny the attraction they feel.  It takes trust, understanding and a bit of courage on both their parts for them to get their relationship off the ground.

What Did I Think?

While this is the fourth book in the series, I could pick up the threads without feeling lost or confused. I was drawn into the story, the town of Sweet, Texas and the characters. I enjoyed that Ms. Terry had Fiona and Mike building a relationship slowly rather than jumping straight into a physical relationship. When they finally got together, it made the moment feel more real.

Pretty much everyone has made mistakes in their lives at one point or another (at least I have) and we question ourselves as a result. Some of us move right on from them, barely pausing, and others like Fiona and Mike, reexamine what we are doing and where we are going with our lives. I appreciated that Ms. Terry did not let it become so melodramatic or preachy, but instead invites the readers to examine how they handle second chances in their own lives.

This is a fast read, the story and characters pull you along into it without you realizing the passage of time. Fiona and Mike are both well rounded characters and likable. The secondary cast of characters are intriguing and since I have not read prior Sweet, Texas books, I am intrigued enough by them to want to go back and fill in the series.
