Top Ten Tuesday: Beginnings and Endings

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, we answer the weekly prompt then visit others who have as well. Come have fun with us, meet new friends and discover new-to-you blogs and books!

This week we are discussing best openings or closing we have read. This is an intriguing question this week.

1) Insurgent by Veronica Roth: I was NOT expecting that ending. I am really looking forward to Allegiant coming out in October.

2) Pretties by Scott Westerfeld: I had such a visceral reaction to how that book ended--I wanted to throw it across the room!

Radical Read-Along Featuring Unearthly, Day 4

Music Plus Books

I have a confession to make....

I went out of town this past weekend to take my niece to my undergraduate alma mater and then to my sister's so it would be easier on my brother to get her (sister's house is halfway point). Anyway...that is not my confession. My confession is...

I finished the WHOLE SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Day 2 of the Radical Read-Along for Unearthly: Discussion Post

Music Plus Books

So, let's see...at this point, here are my thoughts:

The Girls:

  • Girl Fights in High School...I don't really remember having as many of those in high as middle school. LOL
  • I still am so unsure of Angela--more than Wendy. I just am not getting a good vibe from her at all.
  • Clara's Mom...still has some hidden things to tell Clara, I am wondering why she has elected to hide so much from her. I would think she would want to give her daughter as much information as possible

The Guys:

  • Jeffrey: he is such a lady's man in the making...I almost feel like it would be easier to be angel-blood male than angel-blood girl but maybe it is because I see Clara struggling much more than him since it is told through her viewpoint.
  • Christian...something's different about him too I think. Not sure if I am going to like him yet or not.

So what do you all think of this book so far? Do you like it? Who is your favorite character thus far?

We will be traveling most of today...but I will hopefully be able to pop onto do an update with the challenge by tomorrow evening.

Radical Read Along Day 1: Discussion Post

Music Plus Books

So today is the first day that we are discussing Unearthly by Cynthia Hand. I have say thus far, I am really enjoying it.

Things I am Digging About Unearthly:

  • The setting: I would love to go and visit Wyoming. I know it is random, but my husband and I have discussed perhaps moving one day to a smaller town in either Montana/Wyoming/Dakotas or to the Eastern Coast. We will see if that ever comes to volition.

Feature & Follow: What Do You Do with Your Books?

A Weekly Feature by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read--come join us as we learn about our fellow bloggers by answering a weekly question.

This week's question: What Do You Do With Your Books After You're Finished Reading Them?

For me, it depends on what the type of book I am reading. So, here is what I usually do with my books after I am done reading them:

eBooks
  • if it is a e-ARC: I usually archive them but if it was a title that I was not overly fond of, I delete them
  • if it is an e-book I purchased: I will keep them in my library or I will archive them. I have on occasion, deleted them if I really did not like them (usually one of the free ones I have downloaded).

Top Ten Tuesday: I Won't Pick Up a Book

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, we answer the weekly prompt then visit others who have as well. Come have fun with us, meet new friends and discover new-to-you blogs and books!

This week we are discussing words or topics that will NOT make us pick up a book--the inverse of when we discussed topics that make us want to read a book. For that, you can check out my Top Ten Post: What Instantly Makes Me Pick Up a Book.

I try very hard to read books that are out of my natural comfort zone, as I feel it is important to give books/genres a shot every so often. That does not mean that I would give up my favorite books or genres any day of the week, but rather I feel it helps me to keep reading outside of my comfort zone makes me a better reader/reviewer/librarian overall.

The list below are the topics I usually shy away from, for whatever reason listed:

Top Ten Tuesday: Authors Who Deserve More Recognition

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, we answer the weekly prompt then visit others who have as well. Come have fun with us, meet new friends and discover new-to-you blogs and books!

This week we are discussing those authors we feel deserve more recognition. This is an intriguing one that could go all over the place--it will be intriguing to see all the different answers.

1) Miranda Kenneally: her books are wonderful and I do not think she is nearly as well known as what she deserves

2) Wendy Higgins: since Sweet Peril and Sweet Reckoning almost did not get picked up, I think she is another author that deserves more credit that she gets. I would have been so sad if they were not published and now she is self-publishing See Me

Summer Lovin' Day 6 Update

Visit Read-a-Thon Central for more information!

So today we are highlighting those bad boys we love to love...despite knowing that they may not be the best for us. :-)

The first one that immediately comes to mind is Kaiden from Sweet Evil and Sweet Peril. He's quickly becoming a reformed bad boy though (at least it seems like it to me).

Summer Lovin' Challenge Post: Cover Title Scramble

Visit Read-a-Thon Central for more information!

Welcome to my challenge! During one of our many planning meetings, my fellow Pink Ladies I were discussing the challenge posts, I decided to go out on a whim and do something complete on my own, that I have not seen before. Hence, Cover Title Scramble. All of the mumble jumble below are titles of books. To make it slightly easier, I have narrowed it to be books that are published (or will be published) from May to August this year. Summer books for Summer Lovin’! This is by no means an exhaustive list of books that are being published between these months, but a sampling.

Guidelines

  • Pick 5 from each month and unscramble them. Each grouping of letters is one word (and I have kept the words in order)
  • Put the answers in your blog post
  • Submit your answers below using the linky form

Summer Lovin' Day 5: Participation and Update Post

Let’s do book shimmies! We made it through the week-long part of the read-a-thon!!! Congratulate yourself and your new bookish friends on their progress so far. Did you get as much read as you wanted to so far? Have you changed your goals for the 24-hr marathon read?

I have to say that I have managed more reading than I expected thus far. Being off on the 4th definitely helped as I got a much-needed day at home to rest, read and spend time with my family. After being gone this past weekend at ALA, it was lovely to have it!

I am off again today (Friday), but we are helping with some landscaping projects and such so I'm not a 100% sure how much time I will be reading but a hope a good chunk at some point. :)

Share a quote from your current read or tell us about a book that really pulled on your heart strings. What was it about that book/quote that made you cry?

Oh boy, this one is a bit tough for me. I am an emotional reader--I get sucked into books to where my poor husband sometimes has to say my name so many times before it registers that someone is actually speaking to me. LOL I live and breathe the characters as I am reading their stories, that those beautifully written words just meld their way into my psyche that I cannot help but release the emotion. Sometimes it is laughing, other times tears and occasionally groans of frustration.

I remember vividly having tears flow down my face while reading Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak. I had my fan girl moment with her (with a hug!) this past weekend and it probably is one of the biggest highlights of my career. This book is one of my defining moments in life and I cannot recommend it enough.
